We understand that it can be intimidating to take on the responsibility of a race director or event coordinator especially when it comes time to host your first event. We want to help make the process a little easier for you, that is why we asked our friend Sam Rush from Mountain Goat Running to share his advice for all you newcomers. Here are Sam’s 4 pieces of advice for new race directors:
As the director you set the tone for the entire event. It is important to make sure that above nothing else you have fun. If you aren’t having fun it will be very transparent and your volunteers and participants won’t enjoy themselves either.
Acquire Great Volunteers
Find awesome individuals that are willing to help you! Your volunteers are some of the most important people when putting on a race. Why? Because you can’t put on an event without them! Make sure your volunteers know they are valued and appreciated. If you are struggling to find volunteers for your event check out our blog; Finding Dedicated Volunteers for your Event for some helpful tips.
Finding a good online registration solution
Whether you use ZapEvent as your online registration partner or not it, having an exceptional registration solution is crucial. You want to work with a company that can securely collect your participant’s information and give you total access and control to the data. Having all of your of your participant data in on place will save you lots of time and eliminate stress!
Use a reliable timing company
Find a reliable timer that can provide you with quick and accurate results. No matter the method of timing you decide to use finding a company that can assist you with bibs assignment, race-day results, and publishing your results online after the event will keep both you and your participants happy!
