Swim Lesson Red Cross Levels:
Puddle Jumpers (3 to 5 year olds): Examples: Entering the water independently using ladder or steps, Traveling at least 5 yds, bobbing 3 times then safely exiting the water. Gliding on front supported at least 2 body lengths. Rolling to back float w/ support.
Level 1: Examples: Entering the water independently using ladder, steps or side. Traveling at least 5 yards, bobbing 3 times then safely exiting the water. Gliding on front supported at least 2 body lengths. Rolling to a back float for 3 secs w/ support. Recovering to a vertical position with support.
Level 2: Examples: Fully submergiing underwater holding breath. Front and back glide unsupported for 2 body lengths. Rolling from back to front and front to back. Combining arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths.
Level 3: Examples/milestones include: Jumping into deep water from the side. Swimming the front crawl (with patterned breathing) for 15 yds. Maintaining position by treading or floating for 30 secs. Swimming elementary backstroke for 15 yds.
Level 4: Examples/milestones include:Swimming the front crawl for 25 yds. Swimming the elementary backstroke for 25 yds. Swimming the breaststroke for 15 yds. Swimming the back crawl for 15 yds. Open turns on the front and back.
Level 5: Examples include: Performing a shallow-angle dive into deep water. Swimming the front crawl for 50 yds. Swimming the elementary backstroke for 50 yds. Swimming the breakstroke for 25 yds. Swimming the back crawl for 25 yds.
Level 6: Examples vary based on the area of focus!
